چکیده

This paper examines Nash jurisdictional stability in a model with a continuum of agents whose characteristics are distributed over a unidimensional interval. Communal benefits and costs of each individual depend on her identity and the composition of the community which she belongs to. Since the framework is too general to yield an existence of Nash equilibrium, we introduce the essentiality of membership in one of the communities for all individuals. We highlight the Border Indifference Property (BIP), when all individuals located on a border between two adjacent jurisdictions are indifferent about joining either of them and show that BIP is a necessary condition for yielding a Nash equilibrium. We invoke the celebrated GaleNikaido-Debreu Lemma to guarantee the existence of a partition that satisfies BIP. We then proceed to demonstrate that BIP is not sufficient to yield a Nash equilibrium. The equilibrium existence under BIP is rescued when we use the Milgrom-Shannon monotone comparative statics conditions.

Densely Defined Equilibrium Problems

In the present work we deal with set-valued equilibrium problems for which we provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution. The conditions that we consider are imposed not on the whole domain, but rather on a self segment-dense subset of it, a special type of dense subset. As an application, we obtain a generalized Debreu-Gale-Nikaido type theorem, with a considerable weakned W...

Genetically Regulated Metabolic Networks: Gale-Nikaido Modules and Differential Inequalities

We propose an approach to study static properties of metabolic networks with genetic regulation. We base our results on differential inequalities which are constraints on the values of the partial derivatives of the reaction rate functions. The approach uses an iterative elimination method for the steady state equations involving algebraic modules that satisfy the Gale-Nikaido global univalence...

Ordinal notions of submodularity

We consider several ordinal formulations of submodularity, defined for arbitrary binary relations on lattices. Two of these formulations are essentially due to David Kreps (A Representation Theorem for “Preference for Flexibility”, Econometrica, 1979) and one is a weakening of a notion due to Paul Milgrom and Chris Shannon (Monotone Comparative Statics, Econometrica, 1994). We show that any ref...

Adaptive and Sophisticated Learning in Normal Form Games*

In a class of games including some Cournot and Bertrand games, a sequence of plays converges to the unique Nash equilibrium if and only if the sequence is “consistent with adaptive learning” according to the new definition we propose. In the Arrow-Debreu model with gross substitutes, a sequence of prices converges to the competitive equilibrium if and only if the sequence is consistent with ada...

Continuity Properties of Equilibria in Some Fisher and Arrow-Debreu Market Models

Following up on the work of Megiddo and Vazirani [10], who determined continuity properties of equilibrium prices and allocations for perhaps the simplest market model, Fisher’s linear case, we do the same for: – Fisher’s model with piecewise-linear, concave utilities – Fisher’s model with spending constraint utilities – Arrow-Debreu’s model with linear utilities – Eisenberg-Gale markets.
